David Andres’ work is grounded in sustained observation of marine ecosystems in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico, combining underwater photography with a material practice informed by natural science. His paintings investigate the cumulative impact of gillnetting, overfishing, and oceanic waste, revealing the fragile threshold between ecological resilience and irreversible loss.

Early in this inquiry, Andres began constructing images on mica, a naturally occurring mineral whose translucency echoes the optical qualities of water. Delicate acrylic washes—brushed, poured, and layered—move across surfaces embedded with objects recovered from the sea. These materials are not symbolic stand-ins but physical remnants of human presence in marine environments.

Fluid forms emerge that resist fixed identification, inviting viewers to reconsider boundaries between abstraction and representation, artifact and organism, surface and depth. Prior to working with mica, Andres physically molded canvas and paper over found objects and fishing net fragments, embedding environmental traces directly into the structure of the image.

Ground mica mixed into acrylic polymer creates thin, reflective glazes that shimmer across the surface, evoking light refracted underwater. More recent works expand this investigation through encaustic on panel, incorporating underwater photography, mica fragments, and objects collected from the surf. Across media, Andres’ practice remains consistent in its attention to materiality, process, and ecological witness.

David Andres earned his MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Wichita State University, where he was awarded a lectureship in drawing and served as a preparatory assistant at the Ulrich Museum of Art. He later established a studio in Park Slope, Brooklyn, before relocating to Tucson, Arizona.

In Tucson, Andres completed an MA in Education with an emphasis in Gallery Management at the University of Arizona School of Art, along with a post-baccalaureate certificate in K–12 education. He taught painting and served as the first graduate assistant for the Joseph Gross Gallery under the mentorship of Harold Jones, founding director of the Center for Creative Photography.

Andres’ work is held in numerous public collections, including the Tampa Museum of Art, Tucson Museum of Art, University of Arizona Museum of Art, Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Lubbock, and the Monterey Museum of Art, California. Corporate collections include Bank of America (San Francisco), Prudential Tower (Chicago), Swiss Bank (San Francisco), IBM East Coast Headquarters, and Shell Oil Company (Houston). His work appears in over 150 private collections and has been exhibited widely across the United States, Europe, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic in more than 120 group exhibitions and numerous solo shows.

In 2009, Andres and his wife, Julia, were commissioned to produce two bronze sculptures now permanently installed at Corpus Christi Parish in Tucson, Arizona.

Andres was awarded a six-month Artist-in-Residence at Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design in the Dominican Republic, sponsored by Gulf + Western, Paramount Studios, and Parsons School of Design. For fifteen years, he worked with the Arizona Arts Commission, completing 38 Artist-in-Residence grants statewide.

He currently teaches in the Visual Arts Department at Pima Community College, where he became Director of the Louis Carlos Bernal Gallery in 2007. His honors include PCC’s Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award (2010), the Pima County Arts Council “LUMIE” Award for Art Educator of the Year (2012), the Governor’s Award for Independent Art Educator for the State of Arizona (2017), and the Salt River Project “Arts Hero” distinction (2019). In 2020, PCC recognized his leadership in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for curatorial work highlighting artists from Sonora, Oaxaca, Paris, and Ontario. In 2024, he was nominated as Supervisor of the Year.

Andres has been deeply engaged in arts advocacy and volunteerism for over four decades. He was a founding member of Dinnerware Artists Cooperative Gallery in 1983, contributing to the development of Tucson’s downtown arts district. He has volunteered with the Arizona Theatre Company for over 26 years and served as Volunteer of the Year for the Tucson Museum of Art and Contemporary Art Society (2014), later serving as CAS President (2017–2019). He has also served on advisory and auxiliary boards for Tumamoc Hill Laboratories, Latin American Art Patrons, and the BLAC Gallery.

Andres’ studio is located at the Process Museum of Art in Tucson, Arizona.

		<description>Encaustic Series


This body of encaustic work began in 2022 and continues to the present. Although wax and acrylic are traditionally considered incompatible, their interaction on panel surfaces creates complex and compelling visual effects. The series originated through the incorporation of small fragment paintings from the Gillnet series, executed on natural mica.


These mica fragments are combined with archival digital images derived from Andres’ earlier underwater marine photography, bringing together multiple phases of his practice. Encaustic beeswax and jojoba wax bind mica, photographic elements, and other collaged materials to the panel surface. Netting and additional found materials are embedded into the work, forming layered environments that reference the ongoing degradation of ocean habitats.

		<description>Ghost Nets Series 


The ‘Ghost Net Series’ uses large sheets of natural mica that are from a Tennesse Mica mine. In this series, I started using the mica as a painting surface. Washes of acrylic are flowed over the mica sheets that have actual objects such as gill and fish netting are placed on the surface.&#38;nbsp; After the surface dries, I start brushing acrylic paint and mixing ‘Golden’ brand ‘flow paint’ to create the composition. Each painting has betweem than 60-80 layers of acrylic paint.&#38;nbsp; Upon completetion, the actual objects are removed from the surface revealing&#38;nbsp; the many layers of colors and texture. I return to the surface scrapping to reveal the mica surface, a pentimento, trace of earlier layers revealing a push and pull between the transparent mica suface and the paint.&#38;nbsp; My color choices relates to the netting caught on sandy and rocky substraits. Opaque whites and tans refer to the gillnetting caught on the ocean bottoms.&#38;nbsp; The transluent mica gives the apparence of transparent water, and the irridecences invokes the shimmer of the sea.
&#38;nbsp; 
 The title ‘Ghost Net’&#38;nbsp;refers to the presence of gillnetting and fluorocarbon, ‘long lines’, that are used for fishing the coastal waters in the Sea of Cortez.&#38;nbsp; Gillnetting is composed of fabric mesh attached to a lead line and float lines that stretch for miles behind ‘Milling Ships.’&#38;nbsp; The banned nets invariably ensnare endangered porpoises, threated or special-concerned species and unintended marine life.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;The drifting gillnets are sometimes caught on rocky substraits leaving the marine life ensnared. &#38;nbsp;

		<description>Gill Net Series

The Gill Net series, later extended into the Ghost Net series, originated from underwater field research conducted at a deliberately submerged ferry vessel off the coast of Mexico. While surveying the wreck for environmental impact and marine activity, Andres observed clear evidence of contamination affecting surrounding marine life.


During this investigation, he documented a scorpion fish entangled in abandoned fishing netting caught on the upper structure of the vessel. The encounter drew attention to the long-term effects of discarded and drifting fishing nets, commonly referred to as ghost nets, on coastal ecosystems. Subsequent dives revealed extensive sections of translucent gill netting attached to reef substrates, often entangling partially consumed remains of sharks and other marine species.


These observations prompted a sustained investigation into the environmental consequences of abandoned fishing gear. Andres began collecting fragments of recovered netting and incorporating them directly into his studio practice. The materials are embedded, impressed, or collaged into painted and encaustic surfaces, functioning as both physical evidence and compositional structure.


The woven linear networks created by the netting unify the surface while conveying a sense of entanglement, constraint, and interdependence. In the encaustic works, select objects remain visibly embedded in the panel, preserving the presence of the original material rather than a purely representational trace.

		<description>Sea of Cortez Photography

The Sea of Cortez photographs were made primarily in the central Gulf of California near Guaymas, Sonora, and Nuevo San Carlos, as well as along the Baja California Sur coastline. The images are produced through extended periods of scuba diving and direct underwater observation.


All photographs are captured on a Nikonos V amphibious 35mm film camera, a system derived from the original Calypso camera developed in collaboration with Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Andres works exclusively with slide film, primarily Kodachrome and Fujichrome, to preserve color depth and tonal accuracy.


The original transparencies are translated into archival digital prints on 100% cotton rag paper. No digital manipulation or computer enhancement is applied to the images; the conversion process is limited to faithful color and tonal reproduction. Early in the project, Andres worked with professional imaging specialists to ensure accurate selection and high-fidelity digital translation of the photographs.

		<description>Sea of Cortez Prints

The Sea of Cortez series originates from drawings based on my scuba diving experiences in the central Gulf of California near Guaymas, Sonora, and along the Baja California Sur coastline. These works are grounded in direct observation of the marine environment and reflect extended time spent underwater.

Source imagery is captured using a Nikonos V amphibious 35mm film camera, a system originally developed from Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s Calypso design. The photographs are transferred to archival digital prints on 100% cotton rag paper, with no digital manipulation or enhancement.

From each photograph, a line drawing is developed and enlarged to the final image scale. This drawing is placed beneath a sheet of clear plexiglass, onto which oil-based inks are applied by hand. Using sgraffito techniques, details are incised directly into the inked surface. The completed image is then transferred onto archival paper using an etching press, producing a unique monotype print.

Once dry, soft pastel is applied selectively to deepen contrast and soften the surface texture created by the monotype process. The resulting works balance photographic realism with painterly and graphic elements.

The series includes both intimate portrait studies and expansive marine vistas drawn from the Sea of Cortez.

Over a two-year period, the project resulted in fifteen large-scale works measuring 30 × 40 inches, along with more than twenty smaller pieces in various formats. Eight of the large works were donated to the Healing Arts Program at Tucson Medical Center and are permanently installed in the Richmond Corridor Gallery, Tucson, Arizona. 		<description>Sea of Cortez Paintings&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

San Pedro Bay, located in the central Sea of Cortez between Guaymas and Kino Bay, Mexico, has served as a recurring site of long-term observation within this body of work. Extended periods at anchor enabled sustained underwater study, photography, and drawing around the bay’s prominent peninsula.


Several paintings in this series were developed from drawings produced on site, translating direct marine observation into layered painted compositions. A related work from this series was acquired by Tucson International Airport and is permanently installed in the East Terminal.

		<description>Coral Reef and Altos de Chavón Series 


In 1984, David Andres began the Coral Reef series in response to firsthand observations of coral bleaching encountered while diving on offshore reefs. These encounters marked an early engagement with the visible effects of climate change on marine ecosystems, particularly across outer island environments.


During this period, Andres was invited to participate in a six-month artist-in-residence program at Altos de Chavón, located near La Romana along the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic. The residency, affiliated with Parsons School of Design in New York, brought together international artists for sustained studio practice and research.


The Coral Reef and Altos de Chavón series developed concurrently during the residency, reflecting a shift toward large-scale canvas works and sewn paper paintings informed by direct environmental observation. Together, the two bodies of work comprise approximately fifty paintings and represent a pivotal expansion of Andres’ investigation into marine systems, material process, and ecological transformation.

In the spring of 1980, David Andres was awarded an Artist-in-Residence through the Arizona Arts Commission. During the five-month residency, he completed twenty-five paintings on sewn rice paper while conducting extensive field study across northern Arizona and southern Utah.


The residency supported sustained hiking, drawing, and visual research within the stark desert landscape. During this period, Andres also participated in a river expedition along the Colorado River from Mexican Hat, Utah, to Lake Powell near Page, Arizona. Direct exposure to the river corridor, its tributaries, and surrounding geology provided the foundation for this landscape series.


The work reflects careful observation of light interacting with canyon walls, cliff faces, and visible geological stratification. These elements were later reconstructed from memory in the studio, resulting in paintings that emphasize atmosphere, scale, and the sensory experience of place rather than literal description.


Most of the series was exhibited at the Tucson Museum of Art in a five-person exhibition in the spring of 1981. A small number of works from this body of work remain extant. The series continued through 1984, marking a pivotal period in Andres’ practice prior to his transition into underwater research and photography.


Landscape has remained a central mode of inquiry throughout Andres’ career; this series represents an early investigation into the relationship between Arizona light, land, and perceptual memory.
